Welcome to as we speak’s Photograph of the Day! The Makarov PM, adopted in 1951, emerged from the Soviet Union’s post-WWII quest to switch their TT pistols and Nagant revolvers. Underneath Nikolay Makarov’s management, the design received a contest by providing simplicity, reliability, and sturdy building in simply 27 elements. Chambered in 9×18mm, the PM used a simple blowback motion suited to the cartridge’s average energy. The design borrowed components from the Walther PP however simplified them for mass manufacturing. Notable options included a mix security/decocker and a double-action/single-action set off mechanism. The Makarov served as the usual Soviet army and police sidearm by and past the USSR’s dissolution in 1991. It unfold all through the Japanese Bloc, with manufacturing in Bulgaria, East Germany, and China. Although formally changed in Russian service by newer designs, the Makarov’s simplicity and reliability have saved it in widespread use. As of 2016, it remained frequent in Russian army and police service.
